Photos and video can make an AI companion feel more expressive, but visual quality alone does not tell you whether the feature is useful. A beautiful image generator can still feel disconnected from the person you were talking to.

Test identity consistency first

Generate several images across different scenes and expressions. The face, hair and defining characteristics should remain recognizable. If the identity changes every time, the visual feature is closer to a generic generator than a persistent companion.

Check whether conversation affects media

Useful multimodal systems understand context. If you discussed a location, activity or preference, a later image request should be able to use that context when appropriate without forcing you to repeat everything.

Evaluate video as interaction

For video, look beyond resolution. Watch lip synchronization, facial motion, response delay and whether gestures match the personality. Real-time experiences need responsiveness as much as visual realism.

Understand the price model

Images and video are often more expensive to generate than text, so apps may use credits or separate limits. Check the cost before generating and whether failed outputs consume credits.

Review privacy controls

If you upload your own photos, understand how they are stored, whether they are used for training, and how to delete them. Our AI companion privacy checklist covers the broader questions to ask.

Look for continuity, not novelty

The strongest visual companion experience is not the one that creates the most dramatic first image. It is the one that keeps the same identity across repeated use and connects media naturally with conversation.

Run a simple test

Ask for three different scenes, return to one of them later, switch between text and media, and see whether the character remains coherent. Then compare the result with your normal chat experience.

Multimodal features are worth paying for when they deepen a persistent relationship rather than operating as disconnected generators.
