AI companion apps can accumulate years of conversations, memories, profile preferences and generated media. That raises a practical question: if a user changes services or closes an account, what should they be able to take with them?
Chat history is the obvious starting point
Users should be able to export conversation history in a readable format. A useful export includes timestamps, participants and clear separation between user and AI messages rather than an opaque database dump.
Memory should be exported separately
Chat history and long-term memory are not the same thing. An app may store a short summary such as “prefers quiet cafés” even if the original conversation is buried thousands of messages back. The distinction is explained in AI Companion Memory vs Chat History.
Profile and relationship settings
Exports should include user preferences, character configuration, notification settings and relationship controls where practical. These settings are often more useful for continuity than raw chat logs.
Generated media
Images, audio and video created through the service should have clear download rules. Users should know whether files remain available after cancellation and whether generated assets have restrictions on reuse.
What should not be casually portable
Internal safety scores, private creator data, proprietary model prompts or third-party personal information may not belong in a standard export. Portability has to respect other users’ rights and platform security.
Deletion and export are different rights
Downloading data does not necessarily delete it. Users should look for a separate deletion process, retention timeline and explanation of backups. Privacy controls are covered more broadly in AI Companion Privacy Settings.
A useful consumer checklist
Before committing heavily to one AI companion service, check whether it offers a downloadable archive, whether memories are visible, whether generated media can be saved, how account deletion works and whether exports are available without contacting support.
Bottom line
Account portability is becoming more important as AI relationships become longer-lived. A good export should give users meaningful access to the information they created without exposing other people’s data or weakening platform security.
