Cancelling an AI companion subscription and deleting the underlying account are usually different actions. A user may stop paying while still expecting access to old conversations, memories and generated media. Before cancellation, it is worth checking what remains available on the free tier and which export functions disappear with premium access.
Check export before the billing period ends
If data export is a premium feature, download your archive before the subscription expires. Waiting until the next billing cycle can turn a simple export into a support request.
Open the exported file once to confirm it is complete and readable.
Separate cancellation from account deletion
Cancellation normally stops future renewal. Account deletion may remove conversations, memories and profile data.
Do not delete the account merely because you want to stop paying unless that is your actual intent.
Ask what remains on the free plan
Some services keep all history but limit new messages; others restrict old media or premium characters.
Knowing the downgrade behavior helps you decide whether an export is urgent.
Chat history and memory may export separately
A transcript can contain everything you said while a memory system stores summarized facts in another file or interface.
If long-term personalization matters, save both layers where the service supports it.
Generated images may not be in the archive
Media libraries often use separate storage from text conversations. Download important photos and videos individually if the account export does not include binary files.
Keep original resolution when possible.
Voice assets need their own review
Uploaded recordings, cloned voices and generated audio may have different export or deletion rules.
Cancellation should not be assumed to revoke every reusable voice model automatically.
Check file format
HTML and PDF are convenient for reading, while JSON or CSV are better for future migration or analysis.
A good archive can include both a human-readable copy and structured data.
Save account identifiers with the archive
Record which email or login provider was associated with the data. If you return later or contact support, that context can make recovery easier.
Do not store passwords inside the archive.
Review cloud links
An export delivered by temporary download link may expire within hours or days. Move the file to a private storage location rather than assuming the link will remain available.
Protect the archive because it may contain highly personal conversations.
Check whether cancellation changes memory behavior
A free tier may stop adding new memories while keeping old ones, or it may limit memory retrieval.
If you plan to continue using the companion without paying, understand which parts of the relationship experience will change.
Do not assume resubscription restores everything
Some premium-only media or model states may not return after a long inactive period. Export critical content instead of relying on a future resubscription.
This is particularly relevant when the service changes plans or storage policy.
Keep receipts and cancellation confirmation
Billing records are useful if a renewal dispute appears later. Store the cancellation date and the final paid period separately from your conversation archive.
Financial and content records solve different problems.
Check export completeness after cancellation
If the service still allows export on the free plan, compare a fresh archive with the one downloaded before cancellation. Look for missing media, truncated history or removed premium-only metadata.
This helps you understand whether downgrade changed access to old data.
Keep a small readme next to the archive
Write down the service name, export date, file format and any missing categories. Months later, this note will be more useful than trying to remember what each folder contains.
A short description also helps if you later migrate the data to another tool.
Test the free account before deleting anything
After cancellation takes effect, log in and confirm what you can still access. If history remains intact, you may not need a full account deletion.
Our account deletion checklist covers the next step if you actually want the service to remove the account.
Export protects choice
The purpose of an archive is not necessarily to move to another app immediately. It gives you a copy of your own relationship history before billing status or product policy changes. Cancelling should not require losing the context you deliberately want to keep.
