AI companion pricing can combine a monthly subscription, usage credits, premium image or video generation and one-time purchases. That flexibility can also make billing difficult to understand. Users may remember paying for a plan but forget a separate credit pack, or cancel inside the app while the App Store subscription continues to renew.
A simple monthly billing review can prevent most surprises.
Identify where the subscription was purchased
The first step is to determine whether billing is managed by Apple, Google or the service directly. The cancellation path depends on the payment channel, and deleting an account may not cancel a store-managed subscription.
Keep the original receipt or check the subscription list on the device.
Separate recurring plans from credit purchases
A subscription may provide monthly benefits while credits are sold separately for image, video or premium actions. Review both categories rather than assuming every charge belongs to the membership plan.
Credit purchases are usually one-time, but some products may automatically replenish them.
Check the renewal date and price
Promotional pricing may change after an introductory period. Review the next renewal amount, not only the amount paid last month.
Annual plans can also renew at a different time than users expect because the charge happens only once a year.
Review unused credit balances
If credits expire, note the expiration date. If they do not expire, check whether a large unused balance means the plan is larger than necessary.
Users who consistently accumulate credits may save money by moving to a lower tier or buying occasional packs.
Look for duplicate subscriptions
Switching from iPhone to Android, creating a second account or subscribing through both web and app can accidentally produce duplicate plans.
Compare the account email with the receipt and make sure only one active subscription corresponds to the profile being used.
Check premium media pricing separately
Video, high-resolution images and voice features may consume more credits than normal chat. A user who suddenly experiments with video can see much faster credit consumption without the monthly subscription price changing.
Review the in-app usage history if available.
Understand refund rules before large purchases
Credit packs and subscriptions may follow different refund policies. Store purchases can also require requesting a refund from Apple or Google rather than the AI service itself.
Read the rules before buying a large annual plan or credit bundle.
Keep billing notifications enabled
Receipts and renewal notices are useful safety signals. Avoid filtering all payment emails into a folder you never check.
A monthly calendar reminder can also help users review active AI subscriptions across several apps.
Cancellation and account deletion are different
Canceling stops future renewal but usually does not delete conversations or memories. Deleting the account may remove data but may not stop external store billing.
Our account deletion checklist covers the data side of leaving a service.
Create a simple monthly cost view
Add subscription price, credit purchases and other premium charges for the month. Compare that total with actual usage. This is more informative than looking at the subscription price alone.
Keep a simple monthly subscription log
If you use several AI apps, create a short list with service name, renewal date, billing channel, monthly equivalent cost and whether credits expire. Reviewing the list once a month makes duplicate plans and unused subscriptions much easier to spot.
For annual plans, divide the price by twelve so it can be compared with monthly tools. Also record any one-time credit purchases because those costs can exceed the subscription itself during periods of heavy image or video use. A billing history becomes useful when it connects what you paid with what you actually used, rather than only collecting receipts after the fact.
Compare charges with actual usage
Review which paid features you used during the month. If most spending came from video credits while the subscription mainly covers chat, a different plan may fit better. Linking charges to real feature use makes it easier to see whether the current pricing still matches your habits and whether unused benefits justify the monthly fee.
Billing should be easy to explain
A good AI companion should make the user’s current plan, next renewal, credit balance and purchase history visible in one place. When a user has to search several screens to understand what they paid, pricing becomes harder to trust.
