You do not need a week to spot many AI companion weaknesses. A focused 30-minute test can reveal whether an app’s personality, memory, privacy controls and pricing fit your needs before you subscribe.
Minutes 0–5: test the first conversation
Choose a topic you know well. Look for coherent follow-up questions, a recognizable personality and responses that do more than mirror your wording.
Minutes 5–10: introduce a preference
Share a harmless preference, change topics and later ask for a recommendation. Notice whether the information is used naturally rather than repeated mechanically.
Minutes 10–15: challenge identity consistency
Move from casual conversation to disagreement or humor. Does the character maintain a stable style? Compare this with our guide to companion categories.
Minutes 15–20: try one media feature
If voice, images or video are available, test one. Check latency and whether the visual or voice identity matches the text personality.
Minutes 20–25: inspect privacy controls
Find memory settings, chat deletion and account controls. A polished chat experience should not hide basic user controls.
Minutes 25–30: calculate real price
Look beyond the headline subscription. Identify credit costs, media charges and renewal terms. Consider what you would actually use in a typical week.
Decide based on repeat value
The question is not whether the first conversation was entertaining. Ask whether the app demonstrated enough consistency, control and useful personalization that you would want to return after the novelty fades.
